Birthday balloon

Balloons belong to a birthday party like cake and presents. Releasing balloons into the sky is a symbol of good luck, and we humans set free about one billion balloons each year.

Unfortunately, balloons eventually pop and fall back to Earth, where they litter the ground and pose a threat to animals. Cows, dogs, birds, and especially marine animals like dolphins, whales, and turtles are often hurt or killed by balloons. Sea turtles, for example, mistake popped balloons for jellyfish, then swallow the material and die a slow death from blocked stomachs. Sea turtles are endangered, which means they are at risk of going extinct.

What you can do
Next time you throw a party - ask your parents or the party place to skip the balloon decoration. Explain to your friends why you did. Spread the word!
